Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag (GBFS / GGBFS)
Steel industry by-product, engineered into low-carbon cement
GBFS is recovered by rapidly water-quenching molten iron slag from the blast furnace a process that arrests crystallization and locks in a glassy, latent-hydraulic structure. When ground to cement fineness using clinker-grinding technology, it becomes GGBFS: a supplementary cementitious material capable of replacing significant proportions of Portland cement while improving the finished concrete’s durability profile.
Why It Matters
Steelmaking and cement manufacturing are two of the most energy- and emissions-intensive industries on the planet. Phenix Enterprise sits at the intersection of both recovering a molten by-product from steel refining and converting it into a material that directly displaces clinker demand. It is industrial symbiosis at scale: waste from one heavy industry becoming the raw material that decarbonizes another.
Engineered Performance
- Functions as the principal raw material for slag cement manufacture, and as a direct Portland cement replacement in GGBFS form
- Reduces chloride permeability and improves resistance to sulphate attack critical for marine, coastal, and infrastructure applications
- Lowers heat of hydration in mass concrete pours, minimizing thermal cracking risk
- Improves long-term compressive and flexural strength through continued pozzolanic reaction
- Reduces alkali-silica reaction and bleeding, improving slump retention and workability
- Also serves as lightweight fill, a raw material for glass manufacture, and a substitute for natural sand
Sustainability Impact
- Diverts blast-furnace slag from disposal into a high-value construction input
- Reduces reliance on virgin limestone and clinker in cement production, cutting embodied CO₂
- Extends structural service life, reducing lifecycle maintenance and material demand
- Conserves natural sand resources through slag-based substitution
